Tooth Whitening Or Bleaching
The lightening of the color of a tooth through the application of a chemical agent to oxidize the organic pigmentation in the tooth is called bleaching. Bleaching techniques may be classified depending upon the vitality of the tooth and place of performing the procedure. The procedure can be eitherĀ in the office or outside the office.
Most bleaching techniques use some form or derivative of hydrogen peroxide. The same is available in different concentrations and application techniques.
Indications
- Intrinsically discolored teeth from aging, trauma or drug ingestion
- Generalized staining related to food or some habit
- Fluorosis
The most common side effects associated with tooth bleaching are increased sensitivity of teeth and irritation of gums which lasts for a short period of time.
Bleaching normally has a life span of 1 to 5 years depending upon the dietary habits of the patient. Although the change may be permanent in some situations.
