Diastema Closure/Space Closure

Diastema refers to the space present between two teeth. The most common site of diastema is between the maxillary central incisors. The causative factors for the same could be a prominent labial frenum, congenitally missing tooth, undersized or malformed teeth, inter-arch tooth size discrepancies or hereditary. Diastema also may result from other problems such as tongue thrusting, periodontal problem or posterior bite collapse.

Diastema should not be closed without first recognizing and treating the underlying cause. Treating the cause with surgical, periodontal, orthodontic or prosthetic procedures may correct the problem. In carefully selected cased, a more conservative and economical alternative is to use acid etch technique and composite augmentation of proximal surfaces.
